possible HD errors, filecheck fails, what now 913If I were you, I would reboot the machine in single-user mode, and run fsck manually on all your parbreastions. For each of your parbreastions, I'd look in the lost+found directories for files and directories that might have been "misplaced". If you routinely run an intrusion detection system (IDS), and you should, then I'd run that program and let it find the changed files. At times tripwire has been my first indication of a failing disk. If you don't run an IDS, then does your backup program allow you to compare the live data to a backup copy? If so, then look at the comparison, and butture yourself that the changed files are good. Do you run the 'smart' daemon to keep track of disk info? It can warn you of disk failures before they occur. I hate disk crashes. *One day* (tm) I'll add RAID and mirroring to my tape backup regimen. I still need to figure out what I prefer to do about my 2GB tape and my multiple 200GB drives. I've got about 1.3TB of disk in my house. Luckily I have less than 20GB of data that needs regular backup. It's looking like I'll need to buy a couple firewire cases and get some backup 200GB drives, one for on-site and one for off-site, for my full backups, and ship my incremental-differential backups to tape and-or mirror. I do not envy those who deal with backup at a corporate level -- I mean, just how do you backup 1,000TB of data? possible HD errors, filecheck fails, what now 914 Kevin the Drummer I discovered that I AM running "smart".
