NoName Just how hot is it supposed to be inside the box? And how much can a hard drive take?

It happens that I have four 10,000rpm SCSI hard drives in my machine that have two intake fans (80mm x 25mm) on one side of the compartment they are in, and to exhaust fans the same size on the other side. The air coming out of there is always either cool or very slightly warm.

On Fri, 09 Dec 2005 09:55:56 -0500, Jean-David Beyer I got 2 seagate from different series.. I noted there was a slight increase in the temperature that those hard disk could...

The box's system temperature at the moment is 40¡C, and the Maxtor KU018L2 SCSI hard drives are 38¡C, 38¡C, 36¡C, and 35¡C for hda, hdb, hdc, and hdd, respectively. The compartment they are in is by no means sealed, and the order they are in is in increasing distance from the rest of the system.

Now according to the specification, these drives should be able to operate from 5¡C to 55¡C. I also have two Maxtor Diamond Max 9 IDE hard drives and they are claimed to run in the same temperature range. IMAO, unless the box is getting up to around 50¡C or above in there, there should be little need for an additional fan, and if it is above that, you may need a bigger fan (or a replacement one if the one you have is slowing down from tired bearings or something) or additional fans for the whole box, not just the hard drives.

For my two Xeon processors that Intel supply with a fan cooling system of their own design that includes a 60mm x 38mm variable speed fan, they insist that the maximum temperature of the chip be kept below 70¡C. and for that to occur with their cooling system, the processor fan air input temperature should be kept below 45¡C, which is 10¡C below what the hard drives should be experiencing. Right now, mine are running:

CPU0 fan: 3125 RPM CPU1 fan: 2220 RPM System: +40 ¡C CPU0: +53.5 ¡C CPU1: +52.0 ¡C
