Yes, an OS is just a tool.. but there are tools and then there are tools. I understand your comment about religion and I certainly agree: there are zealots for just about every OS...

Are they typeset text, handwritten text, or what? Clarify, please. Did you mean "de-skew image if it's a few degrees off from straight horizontal" or "flip image horizontally and vertically if the original was placed into the scanner backwards"? The first is doable, but deskew algorithms tend to miss things if the image is really badly skewed or contains things other than text. The second might be doable, but I really think you'd have better luck paging through the images rapidly with Kuickshow and processing them manually when you find images that were flipped. YMMV though.
Don't know. There may be something. There may even be a GIMP plugin, or the xsane people may have put something together. I haven't researched this much, though....
