? 80x25 16-color text is the default for the x86, sure, but that's just for the text consoles. X will work fine for almost every graphics card (in 2D) without any special kernel prodding. Since most users spend 99% of their time in X anyway, the whole framebuffer console thing isn't as useful as it once was. Me, I leave it as 80x25 default for simplicity's sake. I also reboot pretty rarely, so boot time isn't a factor for me. I just do suspend-to-RAM on my laptop and turn the monitor off on my desktop.

Yep. So if you use PPP, or have an nVidia graphics card, or a supported LoseModem, or a PCMCIA adapter, you're going to want to build a modular kernel *anyway*.
