Last month I installed Fedora Core 4... Bill Marcum Thanks for the tip. I have not thought of hdparm(8) although it is essential for proper performance of the disks on all of my linux installations. Before I was able to read the replies to my question, I started to search for the brand name, PRETEC, and have found a recovery-util for XP specifically for such write-protection "error". In the mean while, I saw also another recovery-util from another vensor. They provide a XP-tool for reading the USB vendor-product id for fetching the suitable program from their site, but this is easily done by lsusb(1). However, the recovery program has to be run on XP. So, I was forced to boot the pre-installed parbreastion,dev-hda1, on my notebook (after unplugging all networking cables). Glad that I had decided not to delete this ntfs-parbreastion, and it is time for this gui to fullfill it sole duty for me. It worked. The recovery-util did not report the details but the disk was functional again after a "scan" and "reformatting". I will try invoking hdparm -r1-r0 next time I plug in this usb-storage device again, however. regards
