shared disk, two hosts *without clustering* in linux
Thanks, and also to all other people responding. Jan-Frode Myklebust ...-... Yes, i do consider any sort of Cluster File System, *but* only if it lets me the option...

I bet you are so full of hero worship you won't actually consider what I say below:

To "read each line exactly...", I agree that's as good as it gets in ksh. However, null bytes in input will cause interesting results...
Hi..Challenging problem and doubt
Hi, First of all, I would like to thankful to you for giving good guidelines and encouragement to solve my problem. Your suggessions are very helpful to me and for my work. Thank you...

First, chris incorrectly ATTACKED MY ADVISE before I said ANYTHING ABOUT HIM. Get your facts straight. I know he is your religious icon, but that does not change the fact that his attack on my advice was wrong and uncalled for. Are you even going to acknowledge that? I have had plenty of runins with Chris and he is not as smart as you think he is. His ego gets in the way and he gives out less than accurate information, trying to be nice.

You obviously don't know chris' limitations. I DO. This is just ONE example. Chris' line line "Pardon me for doing exactly what the OP wanted AND offering more." is not necessarily the truth. Bet you did not know that. Here is why:

The OP wants to read a "line" from the host file. A "line" from the host file can be looked at IN TWO DIFFERENT ways. As a line of formatted text or a line of DATA where formatting is NOT IMPORTANT.

Chris buttUMED that the OP wanted to read a line of "formated text" and gave an answer accordingly, THAT WAS FINE, BUT it may not actually be what the OP WANTED as Chris claims. The OP may have wanted to read it as data (unformated text). I saw that there was A DIFFERENT WAY OF LOOKING AT WHAT THE OP WANTED and posted a VALID suggestion based on the OP wanting to use the line as DATA and not FORMATED text.

At this point everything would have been fine, the OP would have two different VALID suggestions and he could have picked the one that best suites his needs. Cool, huh? I saw something that Chris missed and filled in the gap, the way things are SUPPOSED to work.

But NO, Chris jumped in and INSISTED that his way was the "correct" way. He ATTACKED ME, *I* held my ground and defended my VALID answer but YOU accuse me of attacking. Your accusation is simply not true.

You say that you have gotten more from chris than anyone else, that may well be true since Chris attacks everyone that has a different solution than him eventually chasing them out of the group. I don't post helpful hints here because I get sick of chris seeing "different" as wrong and getting dragged into defending my VALID BUT DIFFERENT suggestions.

In the long run you may have gotten more help from an INDIVIDUAL but LESS help OVERALL and certainly fewer OPTIONS as to how to approach a problem because of chris' god complex. --
