opt is typically used for programs that are distributed under a non-Free license or as complete binary executables, at least in Linux distros. "Manually installed software" generally ends up inusr-localif the packagers used automake-autoconf--the default prefix= isusr-localthere.

Oh, come on. There are always a few things that are not available in RPM-deb-ebuild form, and installing those "by hand" is not fraught with peril in any way as long as you know what you're doing. And "warez"? The term "warez" is usually used to refer to software that's been illegally copied, and there just isn't very much of that under Linux.

How save is a Windows PC on a Linux network
Kind of OT, but I sure can't ask a Windows newsgroup about a Linux network. I have a small Linux network of 3 machines at home with...

? I've been compiling various things "by hand" since 1999. I've even compiled and installed glibc from source a couple of times. The only times I've seen "random programs randomly crashing" on Linux were due to: A) a cheap, flaky motherboard (well over 40 crashes) B) a kernel bug with VIA chipsets in 2.3.99 .. 2.4.4 (4 crashes) C) pre-alpha evil binary-only nVidia modules (1 crash)

Source tarballs generated with automake-autoconf haveusr-localas their default prefix. You can change that by pbutting the --prefix= string to .-configure . You should always do ".-configure --help" before running configure for real, just so you know what options are available and what you can change.
