Hi Folks,

I am presently running Kubuntu. I originally wanted to watch a video stream from BBC which uses RealPlayer, so I decided to downloaded realplayer for

which has got these instructions:

Is Linux BSD or System V 538
But, I thought I answered that! "Linux cannot actually be either BSD or SysV. It is possible to configure a Linux to be more similar to one than the...

- Ensure that the .bin file you downloaded is executable. You can make the .bin file executable by running the "chmod a+x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin" command from a terminal window.

- Run the .bin file by typing ".-RealPlayer10GOLD.bin". Follow the prompts provided to finish installing the player.

When I put the command in for .-RealPlayer10GOLD.bin it started complaining about not being able to find a library, (think it was a lib) can't remember exactly what it was asking for, only remember when I went to Synaptic to look, it was wanting me to install an older version of what already existed on my PC, and I wondered if it was just this one thing it wanted or if there was a list of stuff that it was going to need.

So I decided to install Helix as Realplayer is supposed to be based on it, and Helix is in my Package Management. It Installed all the firefox plugins automatically etc as far as I could make out.

When I tried the video strem from the BBC's web site, all I get is error messages like:

Connection to server could not be established. You may be experiencing network problems. (rtsp:--212.58.234.120-nfs01-BBCWorld-encodedfiles-worlclick230206showhi.rm) and

It was at this stage I wasn't too sure how to proceed. Don't know if the rpm package will work if I use 'alien' to install it?

Is Linux BSD or System V 539

Originally I thought I thought my package manager was looking at all the correct repositories, however after carefull inspection I found that multiverse was missing. So I have corrected that I found that mplayer is in my list of available packages.

This particular media player seems to have the greatest number capabilities, including a Firefox plugin. So it would seem the obvious choice to install.

I think mplayer will also read realplayer format files, is that correct, and is there anything I would need to do to give it this functionality?

Should I uninstall Helix before installing mplayer?

Thanks in advance,

M
