some newbie partimage questions

Hi All,

I am very new to part image. I have read over the on line FAQ and am confused about some points:

1) When restoring, who recreates the parbreastion? Do you first create it manually with (Linux rescue) fdisk or does partimage take care of it?

A) if you manually recreate it, what happens if you under size it? Does partimage whine about it or does it run for a while and crash?

B) if you manually recreate it, does partimage have an "inquire" command to check the parbreastion size of the archive before creating a new parbreastion to restoring to?

C) if partimage creates the parbreastion itself, must the drive be blank? Can it have other parbreastions present? If so, what are the rules concerning existing parbreastions?

GS It's all important. What is administration, anyway? It's making the machine do whatever it is its owners need it to do...

2) can an image be restored to a different parbreastion than the one it was create from? For instance, I create an image fromdev-sda2, can I restore it todev-sda3?

GS Well, you are right, but there is some movement back to terminals on the desktop - not old green screen terminals, but GUI based...

3) the FAQ states that you can restore to a parbreastion that is larger than the original, but that the extra space won't be used. Does this mean that partimage will "downsize" the end of the parbreastion or does it mean that the parbreastion will just have a bunch of wasted space at the end?

4) the FAQ is confusing about NTFS support. Can I or can I not make an image (backup) of an NTFS parbreastion? If so, can I restore it back where it came from?

Many thanks, --Tony
