On Thursday 03 August 2006 15:55, Floyd L. Davidson stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: On account of runlevels, there are however some things to be taken into consideration. First of all, your description of runlevels leaves me to believe you are running SuSE, because - to my knowledge- almost every other distro with a traditional SysVinitimplementation - Gentoo works a little differently, with "named" runlevels and a different implementation of the services start-stop sequence - uses runlevel 5 as the one that automatically starts X and presents the user with a display manager. Also, traditionally runlevel 2 is used for a multi-user set-up without network connections. The typical (and LSB-approved) runlevel designation is as follows...: - 0 = complete shutdown and poweroff - 1 = single-user maintenance mode - 2 = multi-user mode without networking to other machines(*) - 3 = (default) normal multi-user mode with networking - 4 = unused, like 3 - 5 = (default) like 3 but with GUI login - 6 = reboot (*) Network connections on the local machine via loopback are typically supported. Which runlevel is set as the default is up to the user at installation time - or eventually subject to change at a later stage - but it's almost always 3 or 5. I would therefore recommend runlevel 4 as the one with the alternative set-up that the OP might require. ;-) -- With kind regards, *Aragorn* (Registered GNU-Linux user #223157) stopping a process in inittab 2273 It *clearly* indicates that there are variations.
