General Schvantzkoph The previously mentioned lack of any software except what's on the hard drive is most of the reason. I'm also in no...

One quite a few of whose sysadmin experiences go back to the days when that was the usual case.

Pretty much what you wrote is what I invented to do the chore, with a little hint in personal email from a friend, but thanks for documenting it anyway, I'm surely not the last person who'll need that information.

Yep. Hasn't changed that I can see in twenty years.

My fingers know vi, though they spell it "vim()" these days; I'm long past the point where I have to pay attention to what they're doing in any particular detail. I first ran into vi in 1984, had a brief flirtation with emacs, but was saved from damnation when Stallman added Travesty mode and I realized emacs had become just another tool of the hellspawn who sell RAM add-ons.

Again, my longer experience as a Usenet participant for 20 years is that crossposting exists to be used, that there are good and sufficient reasons for doing so, that the deliberate design of Usenet spools make crossposting a very lightweight and thus good thing compared to the other alternatives, and that those who scream against crossposting do so from ignorance.

Learn to live with that datum, and abandon control freakery. Being at peace with crossposting will help you avoid ulcers and apoplexy when your favorite newsgroup contains crossposted material, a fact of life you won't be the one to reverse, with over a quarter billion Net participants doing pretty much whatever comes into their empty little heads the instant it does, will-thee-nil-thee and with never a "by your leave".

If I were to list only the bugs that I found myself, would amount to open a Bugzilla right...
