Get your host library to request any common linux live-CD.

Michael Heiming United Parcel Service in-shop single user rent-a-computer is blacklisted? Unsubscribe from your blacklisting service, it is severely broken. Umm, I read this...

Boot the live-CD and mount the root parbreastion of the disk. Then, look for filesetc-shadow,etc-gshadow, andetc-pbuttwd, on the disk. Delete the second field in the 'root' user specification, which is the encrypted pbuttword. Root is then pbuttword-free. At least that used to work. It's been a while since I've done something like that.

If you get a boot menu (which you probably do), you can just use the 'single' boot option. That should boot into single-user mode, although I have never done that. If the previous user was paranoid, it may request a pbuttword for that, and then you pretty much have to use the live-CD or original installation CD.

You could just pay $10 mail-order for a Mandriva LE2005 DVD, or series of CDs. Reinstall. It is fairly painless.

If you have PHYSICAL security of the machine (so no other person can boot with a live-CD and so on), it is a good idea to make TWO installations on a disk, on seperate parbreastions. It makes it easy to boot into a working system if you do something silly like changing the root pbuttword. It also makes it easy to backup the primary parbreastion onto the secondary parbreastion. If you have more than 40GB of disk space or so.

Of course you have. Suns blow up regularly. Any 86 breaks down if you run it on a hot day, etc. It's simply not...

You are in a major metropolitan area. It is probably crawling with Linux hobbyists. They may have a club. Look for it. Go to a meeting with the machine, and it will be in shape within minutes. It may be a good place to get job leads, too.
