verizon FIOS +linux 2057verizon FIOS +linux 2058 Verizon FIOS is also coming to my neighborhood, so I researched it. (I'd love to get it, but first I have... Notebook, suggestive use of power save options Black Sun and said: Why would this surprise you? If all the ACPI modules are loaded, ACPI events like the lid closing cause user-definable actions to be... Yes, the $35-40 is just for the internet. Normally, the customer will also pay a similar amount for "regular" phone land line service. My suggestion would be to call Verizon and ask them whether you could get just the internet for $35-40 without having a phone land line with them. The battery is to keep the ONT (optical network terminal) running for phone service during a power outage. With regular copper-based phone service, regulations usually require the phone company to maintain service for 72 hours during a power outage. With FIOS, there is no way to deliver useful electrical power from the phone company, so they install a small UPS to power the ONT during a power outage. If you don't have phone service, just the internet, and if you don't require your internet service to be live during a power outage, then it may be that you SHouldn't need the UPS. However, I would guess it is likely that Verizon will insist you maintain the UPS anyway. (If you're really unlucky, you will encounter Verizon employees (phone droids) who cannot comprehend that you would not have phone service.) -- Robert Riches (Yes, that is one of my email addresses.)
