Because google groups is badly broken and because many people1 posting through google groups have a bad atbreastude. Google does not explain standard posting conventions and makes it harder than necessary to follow them even when you know what they are. Google also does a lousy job of spam control, to the point where some people automatically discard all articles from google and all messages from gmail.
Google has a net-hostile user interface and promotes2 ignorance.

No. It's useful due to the archives, but the UI barks at the moon.
What do you mean by that? If you mean automatically retrieve articles with specific subjects, you certainly can do that with many news readers.
Google for "threaded news reader". Most news readers have some way of organizing articles. Even the ones that don't support threading let you sort by subject.
