writing a GUI for an app running under Linux 1548
Hi Grant I am trying to be sarcastic here or the guy who doesn't try to part of a solution but... as you...

following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...:

User interfaces are a topic all of their own, I'm afraid. It's not quite easy to conceive what would be a good or intuitive user interface. They all seem to have their pros and cons, which is why there are so many, especially for UNIX operating systems.

In addition, most of the existing graphical user interfaces for UNIX are indeed effective at what they do. KDE for instance is a very powerful desktop and window manager combination, which can be tweaked to have exactly the look and feel you desire. It makes use of the excellentQtwidgetset, which as you already know is written in C++.

On Linux, there are several web-scripting languages like PHP, Perl, JSP, Python etc that could replace ASP. Replacing VB's dlls...

Gnome is slightly less configurable in its latest iterations but sure has a lot of fans as well. Gnome uses theGTKwidgetset, which is written in C.

On the other hand, graphical user interfaces have never really been a getting your work done, and the graphical environment of UNIX was in fact only intended so as to be able to display graphical images for DTP and CAD-CAM, either locally or on a remote machine. Desktops and window managers only came much later. ;-)

If you really want to design a new user interface - I haven't read the original thread as I found it out of my league, and you haven't included any quoted content - then you may want to look at the following link. It's something that Apple and allegedly Microsoft attempt to adhere to...:

Something like that is already being done via the Java Virtual Machines. ;-)

Well, you definitely don't want Apple or Microsoft - especially the latter - meddling with with standards. Microsoft has always had the currently still standing reputation of replacing open standards by proprietary formats. Just look at their HTML code or the way Internet Explorer renders HTML in overall. Even their Java Virtual Machine was not compliant with the standards.

The same is now also happening to Microsoft's so-called endorsement - if you ask me, I'd say it's just a contagioned gift - of the Open Document Format. It's all part of their strategy of proprietarizing the market and eradicating all compebreastion.

See my first paragraphs... ;-)
